White Cement
Highlights:
White cement is a type of Portland cement that is distinguished by its white color and refined composition. It is made using raw materials with minimal amounts of iron oxide and manganese oxide—components that typically give grey cement its color.
Composition of White Cement
White cement contains the same basic compounds as grey cement:
- Calcium Oxide (CaO)
- Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂)
- Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃)
- Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃) – kept at extremely low levels
- Magnesium Oxide (MgO)
Manufacturing Process
The production of white cement involves:
- Careful selection of raw materials with low iron content.
- Controlled burning at lower temperatures in a kiln to avoid discoloration.
- High precision grinding to achieve a fine, smooth consistency.
- Use of fuel sources that do not release dark-colored ashes, such as natural gas or oil (instead of coal).
This meticulous process makes white cement more expensive than grey cement.
Applications:
- Precast concrete products (tiles, panels, cladding)
- Architectural facades and finishes
- Sculptures and ornamental work
- Terrazzo flooring
- Grouts and tile adhesives
- Swimming pools and water features
- Colored concretes (when mixed with pigments)
